Selling a product online is not difficult; but it’s not easy either. If you’ve been thinking and researching about selling your own product online, chances are you believe at least one of these myths. Here are 5 common online product selling myths I’ve come across, and my reasoning as to why they are false.
Myth 1: I need to be an expert to create a product and sell it online
That’s simply not true. You don’t have to know everything there is to know about your core area in order to create a good product. You just have to be one step further than your potential customer, just one level higher. You need to know just a little bit more than what you’re trying to teach/portray. Write/create for an audience that is just below you in the the learning curve.
Myth 2: I cannot do it; it’s too hard
This is just a lie we sometimes tell ourselves when we think of everything that is involved in selling a product online. We get overwhelmed by the myriad details of creating the product, setting up the sales process, marketing, product delivery, etc.
We tend to get discouraged and come to the conclusion that we cannot do it. Well, I’m here to tell you, that you can do it! Even if it does involve a bit of effort, it is not beyond your abilities. If you set your mind to it, you can create and sell your own product online.
Myth 3: I don’t know enough to start an online business
Gone are the days where you need a technical know-how to create an online shop, but these days there are several website service providers who’ll give you everything you need, out of the box.
You do, however, need a strategy; pick a niche industry, or product range, or price point.
Don’t try to be all things to all people – narrow your focus and aim to help people, rather than making a few bucks immediately. This overall approach will ultimately lead to success!
Myth 4: Someone is already selling my product online.
This is not a valid excuse that should prevent you from pursuing your idea. In fact, if someone has already began implementing your idea, then chances are it may be a good one, hence it’s worth pursuing!
There are tons of sites that are selling similar product or services on the web, and many factors that influence consumers to purchase from one site over another, so don’t worry about what others are doing and concentrate on the value that you are going to add.
Myth 5: Do whatever it takes to get the sale.
Manipulative, aggressive, high-pressure sales tactics work. But, they don’t create loyal customers and clients. You may win the sale, but in the long run, you will lose the customer.
Some business owners don’t care about what their customers want, they are only after hitting highest figures of income.
Selling is an honorable career and sales professionals need to avoid falling prey to these myths. Focus on helping your customer make an educated buying decision. Concentrate on asking high-quality questions and positioning your solution appropriately and these myths will not affect you.
